Terms and Conditions

1. Introduction

Welcome to SelfPubEmpire! These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the websites and digital properties operated by SelfPubEmpire, LLC ("SelfPubEmpire," "we," "us," or "our"), including:

  • selfpubempire.com — our primary website

  • boileddownbasics.com — condensed book summaries (Boiled Down Basics)

  • ksquaremag.com — online literature magazine (KSquare Magazine)

  • Content hosted at kevinbrandt.com/seniordummies — technology guides for seniors (Senior Dummies' Guides)

(collectively, the "Websites"), and all content, services, features, and subscriptions available through any of the Websites (collectively, the "Services").

By accessing or using any of the Websites or Services, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.

If you are entering into these Terms on behalf of a business or other legal entity, you represent that you have the authority to bind that entity.

2. Our Brands

SelfPubEmpire, LLC operates a family of brands under one umbrella:

  • SelfPubEmpire — the parent brand covering self-publishing education, podcast content, courses, and subscriber services

  • Boiled Down Basics (BDB) — condensed book summaries delivering key takeaways from business, productivity, and self-publishing books ("Wisdom in a Flash")

  • KSquare Magazine — an online literature magazine publishing original fiction, poetry, nonfiction, graphic art, and photography, founded and edited by Gene Lass

  • Senior Dummies' Guides — practical, jargon-free technology guides for seniors, co-authored by Kevin Brandt and Gene Lass

These Terms apply equally to all brands and all Websites listed above. When we refer to "SelfPubEmpire" or "we" in these Terms, we mean SelfPubEmpire, LLC and all of its brands. A single account on our platform provides access to content across all brands, subject to your subscription tier.

3. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use the Services. By using the Services, you represent and warrant that you meet this age requirement and that the information you provide is accurate.

4. Account Registration

To access certain features of the Services (including paid subscriptions), you must create an account. You agree to:

  • Provide accurate, current, and complete information during registration;

  • Keep your account credentials secure and confidential;

  • Notify us immediately at support@selfpubempire.com if you suspect unauthorized use of your account;

  • Accept responsibility for all activity that occurs under your account.

Your account provides access to content and features across all SelfPubEmpire brands based on your subscription tier. You may not create multiple accounts to circumvent subscription restrictions.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account at any time, with or without notice, for any reason, including violation of these Terms.

5. Subscription Plans and Pricing

5.1 Available Tiers

SelfPubEmpire offers the following subscription tiers, which provide access to content across all of our brands:

  • Bronze — Free

  • Silver — $3.99/month

  • Gold — $5.99/month

  • Empire Builder — $6.99/month

  • Empire Pro — $12.99/month

Features and content access vary by tier and are described on our Websites. Content from Boiled Down Basics, KSquare Magazine, and Senior Dummies' Guides may be included at different tier levels. We reserve the right to modify tier names, pricing, and included features at any time. Any pricing changes will take effect at the start of your next billing cycle after notice is provided.

5.2 Billing and Payment

  • Paid subscriptions are billed monthly in U.S. dollars (USD).

  • Payment is processed through our third-party payment provider (currently Wix Payments). By subscribing, you also agree to the payment provider's terms of service.

  • Your subscription will automatically renew at the end of each billing cycle at the then-current rate unless you cancel before the renewal date.

  • If a payment fails, we may suspend access to paid features until payment is successfully processed. We may retry the charge or notify you to update your payment method.

5.3 Upgrading and Downgrading

You may upgrade or downgrade your subscription tier at any time through your account settings. Changes take effect according to the billing policies described on the Website at the time of the change.

6. Cancellation and Refunds

6.1 How to Cancel

You may cancel your paid subscription at any time through your account settings on the Website or by emailing support@selfpubempire.com.

6.2 Effect of Cancellation

  • Upon cancellation, you will retain access to your paid tier's content and features through the end of your current billing period.

  • After the billing period ends, your account will revert to the Bronze (Free) tier.

  • No partial or prorated refunds will be issued for unused portions of a billing cycle.

6.3 Refunds

All subscription payments are non-refundable except where required by applicable law. For full details, see our [Refund Policy](/refund-policy). If you believe you have been charged in error, please contact us at support@selfpubempire.com within 30 days of the charge.

7. Content and Intellectual Property

7.1 Our Content

All content provided through the Services — across all SelfPubEmpire brands — including but not limited to text, articles, book summaries, podcast episodes, audio, video, images, graphics, course materials, literary works published in KSquare Magazine, technology guides, and software (collectively, "Our Content") — is owned by or licensed to SelfPubEmpire, LLC and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws.

You may access and use Our Content solely for your personal, non-commercial use in accordance with your subscription tier. You may not reproduce, distribute, publicly display, modify, create derivative works from, or commercially exploit Our Content without our prior written consent.

7.2 KSquare Magazine Submissions

Content submitted to and published by KSquare Magazine is subject to KSquare Magazine's submission guidelines and any separate contributor agreement. Authors and artists retain the rights specified in the applicable contributor terms. Questions about submissions should be directed to the editorial contact provided at ksquaremag.com.

7.3 Your Content

If you submit, post, or otherwise share content through the Services (such as comments, reviews, or community posts) ("Your Content"), you retain ownership of Your Content. However, by posting Your Content, you grant SelfPubEmpire a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual license to use, display, reproduce, and distribute Your Content in connection with operating and promoting the Services across any of our brands and Websites.

You represent and warrant that Your Content does not violate any third party's rights (including copyright, trademark, or privacy rights) and does not contain unlawful, defamatory, or harmful material.

We may remove Your Content at any time, for any reason, without notice.

8. Prohibited Conduct

You agree not to:

  1. Use the Services for any illegal purpose or in violation of any applicable law;

  2. Share, redistribute, or resell subscription content or your account credentials;

  3. Scrape, crawl, or use automated tools to extract content from any of the Websites;

  4. Upload or transmit viruses, malware, or other harmful code;

  5. Harass, abuse, threaten, or intimidate other users;

  6. Impersonate any person or entity, or misrepresent your affiliation;

  7. Interfere with or disrupt the Services, servers, or networks;

  8. Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the Services;

  9. Use the Services to send spam, chain letters, or unsolicited commercial messages;

  10. Submit plagiarized, fraudulent, or misrepresented work to KSquare Magazine or any other SelfPubEmpire platform.

9. Third-Party Links and Services

The Websites may contain links to third-party websites, platforms, or services (such as Amazon, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or social media sites), as well as links between our own brand Websites. Links to third-party services are provided for convenience only. SelfPubEmpire does not control, endorse, or assume responsibility for any third-party content, products, or services. Your use of third-party services is governed by their respective terms and privacy policies.

10. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICES AND ALL CONTENT — ACROSS ALL SELFPUBEMPIRE BRANDS AND WEBSITES — ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.

SELFPUBEMPIRE DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICES WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE, OR THAT ANY DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED.

THE INFORMATION PROVIDED THROUGH THE SERVICES (INCLUDING SELF-PUBLISHING STRATEGIES, BUSINESS ADVICE, BOOK SUMMARIES, AND TOOL RECOMMENDATIONS) IS FOR EDUCATIONAL AND INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY AND DOES NOT CONSTITUTE PROFESSIONAL, LEGAL, FINANCIAL, OR TAX ADVICE. RESULTS MAY VARY. YOU ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN PUBLISHING AND BUSINESS DECISIONS.

LITERARY WORKS PUBLISHED IN KSQUARE MAGAZINE REPRESENT THE VIEWS AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION OF THEIR AUTHORS AND DO NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT THE OPINIONS OF SELFPUBEMPIRE, LLC.

TECHNOLOGY GUIDES PROVIDED UNDER THE SENIOR DUMMIES BRAND ARE FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ISSUES RESULTING FROM FOLLOWING DEVICE INSTRUCTIONS, AND TECHNOLOGY INTERFACES MAY CHANGE OVER TIME.

11. Limitation of Liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, SELFPUBEMPIRE, ITS OWNERS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, CONTRIBUTORS, AND AFFILIATES SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO USE) THE SERVICES ACROSS ANY OF OUR BRANDS OR WEBSITES, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

IN NO EVENT SHALL OUR TOTAL LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THE SERVICES EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO SELFPUBEMPIRE IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM.

SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF CERTAIN DAMAGES, SO SOME OF THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

12. Indemnification

To the extent permitted by applicable law, you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless SelfPubEmpire, its owners, officers, employees, contributors, and affiliates from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or related to:

  • Your violation of these Terms;

  • Your use of the Services on any of our Websites;

  • Your Content, including any submissions to KSquare Magazine;

  • Your violation of any third party's rights.

13. Privacy

Your use of the Services is also governed by our [Privacy Policy](/privacy-policy), which is incorporated into these Terms by reference. The Privacy Policy applies to all SelfPubEmpire brands and Websites. Please review the Privacy Policy to understand how we collect, use, and protect your information across our family of brands.

14. Trademarks

The following are trademarks of SelfPubEmpire, LLC:

  • "SelfPubEmpire" and the SelfPubEmpire logo

  • "KB's SelfPubEmpire"

  • "Posts to Profit"

  • "Your Empire Starts with a Single Page"

  • "Boiled Down Basics" and "Wisdom in a Flash"

  • "KSquare Magazine"

  • "Senior Dummies" and "Senior Dummies' Guides"

You may not use our trademarks without prior written permission.

All other trademarks appearing on the Websites are the property of their respective owners and are used for referential purposes only.

15. Copyright Complaints

SelfPubEmpire respects the intellectual property rights of others. If you believe content on any of our Websites infringes your copyright, please send a written notice to support@selfpubempire.com with:

  • A description of the copyrighted work you claim has been infringed;

  • The URL or location of the allegedly infringing material (and which Website it appears on);

  • Your contact information;

  • A statement that you have a good faith belief that the use is not authorized; and

  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf.

16. Modifications to the Services and Terms

16.1 Services

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Services — including any brand, Website, or content offering — at any time, with or without notice. We are not liable to you or any third party for any modification, suspension, or discontinuation.

16.2 Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date above and may notify you by email or through the Websites. Your continued use of the Services after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.

17. Termination

17.1 By You

You may stop using the Services and close your account at any time.

17.2 By Us

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Services — across all brands and Websites — at any time, for any reason, including if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms. Upon termination, your right to use the Services ceases immediately.

17.3 Survival

Sections 7 (Content and Intellectual Property), 10 (Disclaimer of Warranties), 11 (Limitation of Liability), 12 (Indemnification), and 18 (Governing Law) survive any termination of these Terms.

18. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Wisconsin, without regard to its conflict of law principles.

Any disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Services shall be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Wisconsin, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction and venue of such courts.

19. General Provisions

  • Entire Agreement. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, Refund Policy, and any applicable contributor agreements, constitute the entire agreement between you and SelfPubEmpire regarding the Services.

  • Severability. If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.

  • No Waiver. Our failure to enforce any provision of these Terms does not constitute a waiver of that provision or any other provision.

  • Assignment. You may not assign or transfer your rights under these Terms. We may assign our rights without restriction.

  • No Agency. Nothing in these Terms creates a partnership, joint venture, employment, or agency relationship between you and SelfPubEmpire.

  • Brand Changes. SelfPubEmpire may add, rename, rebrand, or discontinue individual brands within the SelfPubEmpire family at any time. These Terms will continue to apply to all brands and Websites operated by SelfPubEmpire, LLC.
